Singapore is known as a country that has set a standard for excellence in education.
This article offers an overview of the Singapore education system, explaining how its structure differs from other countries.
Primary School
In Singapore, Primary Education begins at the age of 7 years.
Its syllabus pivots on three facets: Subject-based learning, knowledge skills and character development.
The students will learn these core subjects: English Language, Mother Tongue Language (MTL), Mathematics, Science, Art, Music, Physical Education, Social Studies and Character and Citizenship Education.
The first four years centre on developing the language and numerical skills, while science is taught from Primary 3 to ensure these pupils are not overwhelmed with knowledge.
Based on their examination results in Primary 4, the school will offer appropriate subject combinations for students to take in Primary 5 and 6.
Primary school students are also required to participate in project work, co-curricular activities and programmes for active learning.
At the end of Primary 6, all students will have to sit for a compulsory national examination — the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), which will evaluate the student’s next step in the education system.
Secondary School
According to the PSLE score, students are placed in either Express, Normal Academic and Normal Technical, then take the National Exams at Secondary 4 or Secondary 5, leading to ‘N’ level or ‘O’ level in four or five years.
High School curriculum includes main subjects such as English, the Mother Tongue, Advanced Mathematics, and Sciences, plus other subjects like humanities. Students may also enrol themselves in schools like the School of the Arts (SOTA).
Various curriculum are offered to the lower secondary students so that they can figure out their strengths and weaknesses and find out what type of stream they like best before making their way into a specific stream.
Post Secondary/Pre-University Education
The execution of modified learning pathways enables students to choose the direction they want to pursue. Depending on the student’s strengths and preferences, they can take one of the following options after finishing secondary school.
- Enrol in junior college, a two-year course leading to ‘A’ (advanced) level exams
- Enrol in a polytechnic for a 3-year diploma course
Tertiary Education
Along with other prestigious local universities, Singapore is the home of two of Asia’s top universities by QS World University Rankings. It offers comprehensive resources and programmes to boost your child with in-depth empirical learning opportunities.
To be admitted to these universities, students must prove themselves academically and holistically. In one of the local universities, CPF funds are offered under certain conditions.
Conclusion
The government has established some of the most progressive education policies in the world. Investing in education, it hopes that the future generations will enjoy a better quality of life and continue to grow economically.
Singapore’s education system makes sure that everyone has equal opportunities, which is very important. In addition, they are taught to develop skills, not just to remember facts.
